Refugiums for the Reef Aquarium

As the name may suggest, a refugium is an additional space separate from the main display aquarium that acts as a safe haven for organisms that would otherwise be consumed by inhabitants of the show tank.

There are some major benefits to a refugium. First off, the critters breeding in the refugium make their way back to the display and make for a healthy snack for many of the fish and corals. Also, the critters and algae in the refugium stabilize water chemistry and helps to process nutrients.
