If you've been around CNC routers or CNC router people for more than a couple of weeks, you've heard of missed steps. When missed steps are encountered, a lot of folks immediately start troubleshooting settings, software, even the file itself. Sometimes it’s as simple as a loose coupler on the CNC's lead screws.

Here’s a way to add a troubleshooting aid known as a slippage mark to your couplers, lead screws, and motor shafts. While they won’t prevent a loose coupler from slipping, they’ll instantly confirm or eliminate a loose coupler as the culprit.

There are special “inspection lacquers” that can be purchased for this, but I’ve found that standard correction fluid (known in the US as White Out or Liquid Paper, or as Tipp-Ex in the UK) works just as well. If a slippage should occur, they’re easy to remove with a stiff brush, then reapply once the situation has been taken care of.

For the coupler on the motor shaft end, I used a cheap paint brush made for painting model cars, simply to make it easier to get down into that tight space.
