죤 뉴튼은 영국출신의 시인이자 성공회 성직자였다 .죤 뉴튼은 흑인 노예무역선 선장으로 있었을 때의 체험을 바탕으로 후에 사제가 된 후 주님의 은총을 시로 쓰고 또한 곡을 입혔다고 한다.

이곡은 미국 원주민인 인디언들의 강제이주되는 여정을 말하는 "눈물의 길(Trail of Tears)"을 걷는 동안 애창되었다고 하며, 이중 5대부족의 하나인 체로키(Cherokee)족의 애국가로 선정되었다. 또한 미국의 남북전쟁(1861년–1865년)중에도 북군, 남군 모두가 향수를 달래는 노래로 애창했다고 한다.

한국은 "어메이징 그레이스(놀라운 은총)" 또는 죄많은 나를 살리신" 등으로 번안하여 부르고 있다.
