To make beef siomai, mix ground beef with minced carrots, onions, garlic, scallions, egg, soy sauce, sesame oil, and seasonings (salt, pepper, optional sugar/oyster sauce/breadcrumbs); then wrap spoonfuls in wonton wrappers, leaving the top open, and steam for 15-20 minutes until cooked, serving with a dipping sauce.
Ingredients
Meat: 1 lb (500g) ground beef
Vegetables: ½ cup minced carrots, ¼ cup minced onion, ¼ cup minced green onions (scallions)
Binders/Flavor: 1 large egg, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil, ¼ cup breadcrumbs or cornstarch, 1 tsp sugar (optional)
Seasoning: ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp ground black pepper, 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
Wrappers: Wonton wrappers (round or square)
Dipping Sauce: Soy sauce, calamansi (or lemon/vinegar), chili garlic oil, toasted garlic
Instructions
Mix Filling: In a bowl, combine ground beef, carrots, onion, green onions, egg, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, pepper, sugar, and oyster sauce (if using). Mix well until fully combined.
Assemble Siomai: Place a spoonful (about 1 tbsp) of filling in the center of a wrapper. Gather the edges up and around the filling, pinching slightly to form a cup shape, leaving the top open.
Steam: Lightly oil a steamer basket. Arrange siomai with space between them and steam for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through.
Serve: Serve hot with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce, calamansi juice, chili garlic oil, and toasted garlic.
