Have you ever gotten stuck trying to learn a solo?

This can be discouraging and demotivating.

Perhaps some hotshot told you, “The best way to learn lead is to learn solos.”

While this is decent advice. It’s only one piece of the puzzle.

Below are 3 big problems students face when they try to give this a go:

1) Lacking the ability to work the solo out by ear
Players sometimes try… but they get stuck hunting and pecking around the fretboard or searching for the perfect TAB. Even with an “OK” sheet, the solos often go too fast, and then they give up.

2) They pick solos that are way too hard

If you’ve never played a solo before, the worst thing to do is pick a legendary guitar solo like “Cliffs Of Dover”, “Hotel California”, or “Crossroads”. Players need to ease into soloing. This is the equivalent of someone never skiing in their life. But then making their first run a double black diamond slope. They won’t make it down alive.

3) It just takes too long

Players can hit this 3rd problem even with a great TAB, and picking a solo that is not too hard. This can even plague experienced players too.

I’ve got hundreds of broken-down solos note-for-note in videos online alone. But STILL learning every note of a solo takes time. And sometimes, I only take away 1 or 2 good licks that I end up using in my solos.

The point is…

If you’re struggling with some of these issues, an easier way to go about improving your solos is to learn licks.

You don’t have to learn entire solos. There is also a lot of value in simply grabbing some of your favorite licks and putting them into your “lick bag”.

Imagine if you had 100 licks you could use as building blocks to improvise and create solos. You could combine them in different ways, and use them express yourself in a whole new way.

This is a quick hack to level up your lead playing.
