John Kinsel Sr. was sworn in as a Marine on Oct. 10, 1942, and sent to the San Diego Recruit Depot for boot camp.

He recalls working alongside a few of the first 29 code talkers to create additional code terms including a term for "tank" (CHAY-DA-GAHI) and one for "trail" (GAH-BIH-TKEEN).

There are only five living code talkers as of September 2019: Peter MacDonald, Joe Vandever Sr., Samuel F. Sandoval, Thomas H. Begay and John Kinsel Sr.
