Oni Village 男鬼集落

Oni Village is an abandoned village in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. This mountain village, located at an altitude of about 420m, still retains the scenery of the good old days of Japan, and conveys the lives of people in the past to the present day. According to old records, Oki-ji Temple was built in the middle of the 8th century when the missionaries of Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara built seven temples at the foot of Mt. ing.

It is said that there were more than 100 people and about 30 houses in the peak of the Meiji era, and until the road to Taga was opened, it was the main access point for the people of Reisen and Kuregahata to the Hikone area. As a settlement along the main road, it was bustling with people coming and going. Subsistence activities were mainly forestry such as charcoal making, burdock cultivation, and sericulture. With the rapid economic growth after the war, residents lost their livelihoods and young people did not settle down in the village.
男鬼集落は滋賀県の彦根市にある廃村である。標高約420m地点に位置するこの山間集落は、今でも古き良き日本の風景を色濃く残しており、かつての人々の暮らしを現代に伝えている。古い記録では、8世紀中頃に奈良の興福寺の宣教が、霊仙山の麓に七ヶ寺を創建した際に、男鬼寺が建てられたという記録が残っており、これが集落の由来とされている。

明治時代の盛期には100人を超える人口と、約30戸もの人家があったといい、多賀方面への道路が開通するまでは、霊仙や榑ヶ畑の人々が彦根方面へアクセスする際の表街道沿いの集落として、行き交う人々で賑わった。生業は主に林業による製炭やゴボウ栽培、養蚕も盛んであった。戦後の高度経済成長に伴い、住民は生業を失い、若者も集落には定着しなかったことから、人口の減少が急速に進み、1971年には廃村となる。
