This five-minute film was originally created in 2020 as a proof of concept for a larger biopic about the legendary Robin Williams. It is a labor of love, born from my deep admiration for Robin, and it captures one small yet meaningful moment of his life that we felt deserved to be told.
For me, this project is very personal. Robin Williams has long been one of my greatest inspirations, both as an actor and as a person. Portraying him was a humbling and moving experience. I wanted to honor the man who inspired me and so many others in our hearts and *minds something I think we all could use today more than ever. My hope was to pay tribute not just with an imitation piece, but by telling a story that reflected Robin’s spirit, humor, and humanity.
In choosing what story to tell, I selected a real-life moment that I felt encapsulated an emotional arc in Robin’s life. The short depicts a day during Robin’s Mork & Mindy years when he was confronted with heartbreaking news about a dear friend. It was a moment that tested his strength and showed his compassion behind the scenes. By focusing on this pivotal scene, our goal was to explore Robin’s depth as a person and performer in a short form – a glimpse into his world that could hint at the larger story of his life.
I was careful in selecting the team for this project and worked closely with other producers who could help accomplish the endeavor with the respect and intention it deserved. I was incredibly fortunate to collaborate with an amazing team to bring Robin to life. I am very proud of the work that was put in and of the love and care that everyone involved brought to this project.
From the very start, it was always my intention that a portion of any future proceeds from this project — or any official film had it moved forward — would be channeled back to specific charities and to the estate, in honor of Robin’s legacy. This remains a guiding principle I carry forward in any biopic or similar work I pursue today, especially when honoring the lives of those we love and respect and who have helped us so much as a species progress forward.
From the beginning, we understood how sensitive and important it is to portray Robin Williams with respect. I made every effort to communicate with Robin’s family and estate as we developed this project, because their comfort and blessing meant the world to me. In those conversations, Robin’s estate made it clear that they were not interested in pursuing any official biopic of his life at this time – a stance that I completely understood and respected. In fact, out of deference to the family’s wishes and to avoid any misinterpretation about our intentions, I chose to temporarily remove the Robin short film from public view after its initial release. My goal was to ensure we did not cause any distress or give the impression of moving forward with a larger project without the family’s support.
Now, with time and further open communication, we have a clearer understanding with Robin’s family and estate regarding our short film. They have kindly expressed that they have no objection to the Robin short being shared publicly, and have even conveyed appreciation for the respect and authenticity with which we approached Robin’s portrayal. Knowing that those who were closest to Robin recognize the sincerity of our intentions has been incredibly meaningful to me and everyone involved. It is with their understanding in mind that we feel comfortable—and indeed, grateful—to share this film with the public once again.
I want to be absolutely clear that we will not be pursuing a full-length Robin Williams biopic or any further expansion of this project at this time. We created this short film purely out of love and respect for Robin’s legacy, and we remain committed to honoring the Williams family’s wishes. Should the family and estate ever decide to pursue a biopic in the future, it would be the greatest honor to be a part of that conversation. But for now, our focus is solely on sharing this short film as a tribute, and nothing more.
Finally, I would like to thank all of you — the fans, friends, and filmmakers whose belief in the project and what it represents helped make it what it is.
