This song is about Shaun's discontent with the society at large around him, and it is specifically mocking America. The main idea of this song is to question all of the bulls**t in our lives that we are afraid to think about.
In the line "If I gave you the truth, would it keep you alive?" Shaun is speaking to people who have become disillusioned with the fantasy world created by humans, i.e. Holidays, religions, rampant consumerism. This can be seen in the video for the song.
"Though I'm closer to wrong, I'm no further from right" is Shaun's way of saying that the modern world's system of morality is baseless and has no foundation in reality.
"And now I'm convinced on the inside that something's wrong with me. Convinced on the inside, you're so much more than me, yeah" is supposed to bring attention to how our society is always expecting people to live up to some unattainable, imagined standard. No matter what you do, someone will always be expecting more from you.
"No there's nothing you say that can salvage the lie
But I'm trying to keep my intentions disguised". "The lie" is the imagined world our religious and corporate groups force on us everyday, like the notions that we must somehow appease a higher authority, or that happiness can be found in material gains.
"And now I'm deprived of my conscience and something's got to give" is talking about how in modern society, our conscience and our thoughts are basically programmed to function the way that those in powerful positions want them to function.
In the chorus, he uses the phrase "beaten down" because at the mere mention of questioning religion or the way of life in america, people start trembling and get belligerent. In this sense, you really do "belong to them".
The last verse is where the magic is. "The deception you show is your own parasite
Just a word of advice you can heed if you like" means that if you don't begin to question the things around you and analyze your life, it will be spent in vain lining the pockets of and amusing those in power.
Shaun and Seether are asking you to really think about your life in this song. They want you to think for yourself and not just believe things because mommy, or your preacher, or your president told you to. And this is not Seether's first song about this. Check out "Gasoline", it has a very similar meaning. Shaun Morgan is one of the most intelligent people in music today.
