Welcome to episode 4 of Business Travel Diaries! I’m still in China – almost wrapping up this trip before moving on to the next destination.

After an intense day at the factory producing my hair tools, I spent the next four days packed with meetings and tours of new manufacturers. I’m looking to expand my brand with new products – like a professional blow dryer and a full line of hairbrushes – and I met factories willing to develop brand-new models from scratch.

Alongside the factory visits, I also went to the wholesale hair products market in Guangzhou. In China there’s a wholesale market for almost everything – textiles, makeup, electronics, packaging – and in these markets you can see hundreds of existing models ready for private label. But very quickly I realized: most of it is low quality “sticker products” – the same curling irons, straighteners and blow dryers with different logos.

From the beginning, I promised myself not to fall into that trap. I don’t want to just put my brand name on a product that already exists. I want to create tools I believe in – designed specifically for hairstylists, because I was one myself.

This episode is a raw look at the difference between private label “shortcuts” and building your own product line from scratch, and the challenges of doing it while traveling in China.
