A small group of protesters gathered in Istanbul on Saturday (November 29) to voice opposition to Pope Leo’s visit to Turkey, claiming the trip threatens the country’s sovereignty and independence.

While the protest unfolded, Pope Leo met Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I just a few kilometres away as part of his four-day visit.

Earlier, Pope Leo toured Istanbul’s historic Blue Mosque, removing his shoes in a gesture of respect while being guided by the imam and mufti. This marks his first visit to a Muslim place of worship as the first U.S.-born pope.
