Hazrat Umar (RA) and the Letter to the Nile River: A Short Story

In Egypt, there was an old custom that the Nile River would only flow if a young girl was sacrificed and thrown into it every year. People believed that without this sacrifice, the river wouldn’t flow, and drought would strike. When Egypt’s governor, Amr ibn al-As (RA), informed Hazrat Umar (RA) about this, Hazrat Umar wrote a letter addressed to the Nile River.

The letter said:

“If you flow by your own will, then do not flow. But if you flow by the command of Allah, then we pray to Allah to command you to flow.”

This letter was thrown into the Nile. The next morning, the Nile River started flowing with full force, without any sacrifice. After this event, the old custom was abolished forever, and the people placed their faith in the power of Allah.
