0:04 Live Cannabis
We're here at the Oregon State Fair, standing in front of the world's very first ever cannabis exhibit. That's right, in Oregon, we recognize cannabis as a significant, legitimate, agricultural product, and one of the pieces of evidence of the normalizing of our culture, is the fact that right here behind me in this tent, are 9 live cannabis plants. Let's go inside and see.
0:26 IN the Green House
So here we are inside of the green house and you can see behind us all the gorgeous, beautiful cannabis plants. Live, luscious and ripe. There are actually still in the vegetative state, so they have been held from flowering, until they get taken out of here and into the greenhouses. This year, they can only be vegetative plants, next year they're going to be able to be flowering plants. If you look over here, you can see these beautiful mid-sized shaped leaves, and there's continuing leaf growth right here.
0:54 Vegetative Cannabis Plants
Over on this plant that is very large, this is almost the size that you would expect to see on an outdoor plant. You can see the beginnings of flowering starting to happen automatically, because it's getting to be that time of year. The way the plants trigger is they do the vegetative state, which is growing up into all of the mass, and as the light darkens and the days shorten, that triggers the plant that it's time to make flowers, which would produce seeds normally. But what we do is we keep them from interacting with male plants, so they're beautiful, huge, luscious, rich, fragrant flowers, and that's a key piece of cannabis, is controlling that piece.
1:29 Live Hemp Plant
Notice there are different coloration's over here in these plants. This one is actually a hemp plant, so a slightly different class. It is considered a hybrid, so it won 3rd place in the hybrid. This grower, Jerry Norton is doing some great work around bringing hemp and all the qualities of industrial hemp to the world. Really appreciate what he's doing.
1:47 Close up on Live Cannabis Plants
Down here you'll notice the dramatically different colors of the leaves, so you can really see how dark the mature plant can get. Which to me, indicates really solid nutrient feeding, and the beautiful light green growth inside. Back here, this indica has remarkably slender leaves, they're just beautiful, long and gorgeous. Then this, also an indica, showing a little bit of the confusion around indica, hybrid, and sativa. Giant, fat, beautiful, lovely fronds.
2:14 First Place Cannabis
Over here we have the first place winners for the indica and the sativa category, and we were wondering, what was the judging criteria for this contest? Well they have five different criteria that all the plants went through.
2:30 Cannabis Competition Judging Criteria
First was strength, where they'll show the overall strength of the plant through the stems and everything, the leaves and everything. Great. They also look for wellness. They were going to check it for bugs, check it for any diseases.
Great. Then they went for what they call botanicals, which botanicals is your smell, your aroma. Nice. And they all know, just like a fine wine, what each plant, what type should smell like, and they'll do that. Another part was the construction of the plant, the nodes construction on how tight they were. Tight buds. How it was going to make a denser product and denser flower at the end. Awesome. These are your nodes here, see how tight they are together. Very, very clustered. In between each branch? Yeah, and how close they are right here. So length is a factor, that's going to produce much denser, bushier plants. Yes, it is. Much more denser, bushier plants. Thanks so much for taking a minute to talk to us, and congratulations. All right, thank you. Smuggle Portland. We'll see you again.
