The genetic code is the set of rules that determines how genetic information, encoded in DNA and RNA, is translated into proteins. It consists of a specific correspondence between a sequence of three nucleotides (codons) in the DNA or RNA and a specific amino acid in the protein. There are 64 possible codons, each coding for either one of the 20 standard amino acids or serving as a stop signal to terminate protein synthesis. The genetic code is nearly universal across all living organisms, with some variations in mitochondrial DNA and certain microorganisms. The deciphering of the genetic code was a landmark achievement in molecular biology, allowing scientists to understand the link between the information stored in genes and the proteins that perform essential functions in cells
