Newshub's Kate Rodger chats with Guillermo del Toro about his latest film, The Shape of Water.

"The only monstrosity that exists is in the human heart," he says.
"That's the real monstrosity. And then to take the figure of a creature and make it elevated, and make it take its place in cosmology. Because it's an elemental god from the river, to make you see the beauty of it, the humility of it, and the majesty of it.
On his cast, del Toro says he knew who they were from the story's inception.
"I like to write with the actors in mind, it's so much easier. You're almost writing a song for a certain singer. That's how I wanted the movie to be perceived, like a fairytale for troubled times, a movie that you feel a rush like when you're listening to a great song and you come out of the theatre humming the movie, you know? Like, feeling it.
"The movie is about today and a lot of things that we experience. The movie is set in 1962, but it's about toxic masculinity, division, the cold war, fearing the other, blah blah blah and I think the heroes need to emerge from the most unlikely place. So the characters seen by the antagonist as the weakest, are the characters that stand up to him.
"Ultimately, it's about talking about the most powerful element in the universe. Which is like water, it's love. It has no shape, it breaks through every barrier, and it does it with patience, gentility and being malleable and flexible."
