Mindflayer must be killed before the Varghidpolis’. The trick to this battle is to equip someone with the First Strike Materia and Magnify paired with Binding. This allows you to cast Sleep which will keep the Varghidpolis’ out of the battle so you can focus entirely on the boss.

You can easily pressure and stagger the boss by using a synergy ability in which you can kill Mindflayer in one phase. Use Tifa’s Unbridled Strength and buff Cloud with Sonic Boom from the Enemy Skill materia. Once you have 3 synergy bars, activate a synergy ability, then use Focus Thrust to stagger Mindflayer. Spam triangle on Tifa for Rise & Fall and Omnistrike, then finish the boss off with any damaging ability.

Once Mindflayer is dead, you’ve really already won. Don’t worry if the Varghidpolis’ use deafening screech followed by self immolation, they can only kill 2 of your 3 party and die using it.
