On 7 March 2012 Wolfgang Schäuble, German Minister of Finance, visited the EUI and spoke on 'Europe: Economic and Institutional Perspectives', within the ambit of the Debating Europe initiative. In his talk, Minister Schäuble traced the European integration project from its beginnings at the Messina Conference to the current situation, and reflected on Europe's need for a unifying narrative and identity to further the integration process. He also touched upon how the Union could increase its legitimacy, as well as the challenges it faces in creating a real, functioning economic and monetary union.
