On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, my journey began aboard the iconic Amtrak California Zephyr at the Emeryville Station in San Francisco Bay Area. This marked the start of a spectacular, 33-hour sightseeing trip to Denver, Colorado. After arriving at Denver, we stayed in a hotel in Denver for two nights on September 4 and September 5. On the morning of September 6, we got on California Zephyr again for our return trip back to San Francisco Bay Area.

As an excursion tour of this Amtrak California Zephyr Trip, on the morning of September 5, we got a rental car in Denver and drove south for 71 miles (about 1 hour and 11 minutes) to Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs.

At the foot of majestic Rocky Mountains, Garden of the Gods is a natural park of exceptional beauty that offer breathtaking panorama of spectacular red, orange, pink and white sandstone formations.

In 1859, two surveyors exploring Colorado stopped in their tracks when they spotted a series of large, red sandstone formations protruding from the earth. The awe-inspiring geological marvels allegedly caused one of the men to proclaim, “Why, it is a fit place for the Gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods.” This place is really Godly, you’ll walk away feeling inspired.

Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971, Garden of the Gods is not only a paradise for photographers, but also a prime playground of outdoor enthusiasts, who can enjoy a multitude of activities such as hiking, rock climbing and biking. Each nature trail offers unique epic views and new perspectives on the park’s incredible rock formations, some of which bear evocative names like Cathedral Spires, Sleeping Giant and Tower of Babel.

It’s the kind of gorgeous place that reminds you how amazing nature really is. So beautiful! So many photo opportunities! Such a delightful place to visit. You will literally stop walking just to admire the view of the massive towering red rock formations.

The park has a Visitor Center located at 1805 N 30th St, Colorado Springs, CO 80904, on the east side of the park.

We entered Garden of the Gods through one of the three southern entrances on Garden Drive which took us immediately to the Steamboat Rock and the Balanced Rock which seems to defy the law of physics. Many tourists were having fun with this huge Balanced Rock as shown at the beginning of my YouTube video below.
