The traditional Koudi quilt craft holds a special place in the culture of North Karnataka. Even today, many families use Koudi as a blanket while sleeping because of its unique comfort. These handmade quilts are widely produced in parts of Koppal district such as Hanumasagar, Kinnal, Bhagyanagar and surrounding areas, where hundreds of women depend on this craft for their livelihood.
Koudi quilts are made using old clothes like sarees, nighties, and other fabric pieces stitched together creatively. Each Koudi is unique because the materials and patterns used are always different. Interestingly, these quilts provide natural comfort — they feel cool during summer and warm during winter, making them highly practical and sustainable.
However, despite the hard work and skill involved, the women who stitch Koudi quilts often struggle to earn fair income. With the arrival of modern blankets, bed sheets, and factory-made products, the demand for traditional Koudi has reduced, affecting the livelihoods of many families.
Women artisans in Hanumasagar are now urging the government to recognize their craft, provide support, subsidies, and create opportunities so that this unique traditional art and the livelihoods attached to it can survive for future generations.
