This is always a hot topic in the dog training community-People asking to pet your dog, or doing it anyway regardless of how owners feel about it.
I spend so much time teaching owners how to advocate for their dogs and keep them safe. This is such an important concept to grasp because not every dog enjoys being pet and not every owner wants their dog being pet.
Most folks get a dog for their own enjoyment, not others’. This is not just a personal boundary issue, but it’s a training issue as well. We work with so many dogs who are fearful or reactive towards humans, and being pet by strangers only reinforces the behaviors we are trying to work through.
Saying “no” to people petting your dog should fall under the same category as saying “no” to someone who is touching a personal belonging or getting into your car without permission. I want all dog owners to feel empowered enough to set firm boundaries with their dogs.
