Throughout the Kushite Kingdoms women were considered equal to men. They had influential
roles and held prominent positions. They enjoyed political and personal independence, shared in
decision making and had power and authority unique to Kush. These women’s power was
unmatched anywhere else in the ancient world at that time, or even in the present day.

Women were queen regent, co-rulers, high priestesses and led armies to defend their kingdoms. The fame of the Kandake/Candace of Meroe was well known in the ancient world. Kushite women
success, skills and leadership were unquestionable.

They were truly extraordinary women.
