Iran International Claims 12,000 Killed in Two-Day Crackdown as Protests Continue Nationwide

Opposition news outlet Iran International is reporting that at least 12,000 people were killed during the crackdown on nationwide protests, with the majority occurring over just two days on January 8 and 9. The outlet, which operates outside Iran and is identified with the opposition, says its editorial board reached this conclusion after reviewing what it describes as sources close to government bodies, field reports, hospital data, and eyewitness testimony gathered during a covert investigation inside the country. If accurate, this would represent the largest killing in Iran's contemporary history.

The figure is significantly higher than other estimates. Human rights groups like HRANA have confirmed approximately 483 protester deaths with hundreds more under investigation. Time Magazine cited a possible total of 6,000. Iran Human Rights, based in Norway, has verified 192 deaths while noting unverified reports suggest the toll could reach into the thousands. The near-total internet blackout imposed since January 8 has made independent verification extremely difficult, with rights organizations warning the true scale remains unclear.

International response has intensified. The Netherlands, Spain, Finland, and Germany have summoned Iranian ambassadors over the violence. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he believes the regime is "nearing its end," stating that reliance on violence shows a loss of legitimacy. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk called the situation "horrifying" and condemned labeling protesters as "terrorists" to justify the crackdown. Iranian authorities have threatened demonstrators with moharebeh (enmity against God) charges, which carry the death penalty.
