On November 14th 1991 a student nurse went to The Mean Fiddler in London to watch Half Man Half Biscuit. Little did she know that she was going to meet me, Pat Orchard, Half Man Half Fruitcake.
There was a time after soon I first met her that I should 'set her free' due to the age difference between us and on the flight over to Switzerland I wrote this tune. Knowing I was going to let her know that our brief time together would be over on my return I felt driven to write this as some kind of lame apology?
It was madness that I had only finished it in the hotel hours before I decided to play it on MTV.
The rawness in both emotion and performance can be heard in this song that was recorded through the mixing desk.
I am so grateful that within a week I meekly went back to her student quarters in Middlesex Hospital and asked her out for a second date. One that would last 34 years.
