Automating In-place Ubuntu Upgrade of OpenStack Infrastructure with Kayobe

Описание к видео Automating In-place Ubuntu Upgrade of OpenStack Infrastructure with Kayobe

We all know that upgrading our systems frequently is essential to security and performance. In cloud infrastructure, it is often one of the most complex and time consuming maintenance tasks. StackHPC provides bespoke HPC and AI cloud infrastructure solutions using Openstack. We have to face this problem on a regular basis.

As Ubuntu 20.04 support was ended from Openstack Zed onwards, we had to migrate 8 different OpenStack deployments to Ubuntu 22.04. We took this as an opportunity to implement automation that can handle in-place Ubuntu upgrades without re-provisioning hosts. This made the upgrade process much more simple, fast, reliable, and easy to automate. The key challenge for our implementation was to upgrade via our custom version-controlled package repositories, while making use of standard tools where possible.
In this presentation, we will share how we automated Ubuntu upgrade using Ansible, Kayobe and Kayobe-config and the obstacles we had to solve including network configuration challenges, python versioning conflicts and minimising downtime.
