Russia’s Hmeimim air base in Syria has become a refuge for around 9,000 people fleeing deadly sectarian violence, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. The base, a key Russian military outpost, remains under Moscow’s control despite the fall of its longtime ally, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Zakharova stated that most of those seeking shelter are women and children, fearing for their lives amid the escalating conflict.
