In this math video lesson we will learn how to identify proportional relationships. Students will be able to identify whether a relationship is proportional between two quantities using bar diagrams.
Students will be able to determine if ratios are equivalent to decide if a relationship is proportional.
By the end of the video students will be able to answer the essential question - What does it mean for two relationships to be proportional? We will define a proportional relationship which is a relationship that exists between two quantities when their ratios are constant. We will consider several real world relationships and learn two strategies to determine if the relationships are proportional. We will first create and use bar diagrams to determine proportionality. Second, we will write relationships as ratios that are complex fractions and review how to simplify complex fractions to determine if they are equivalent. Student practice problems are embedded throughout the lesson. Exemplar solutions are visually modeled and explained.

7.RP.A.2.a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.
