The process of making a sparkler begins with preparing a special mixture of chemicals that will create the sparkling effect when ignited. This mixture typically includes an oxidizer, such as potassium nitrate, which helps fuel the fire by supplying oxygen. Alongside this, a fuel like charcoal or sulfur is added to generate heat. To produce the actual sparks, metal powders such as aluminum, iron filings, or magnesium are mixed in. These metals burn brightly and create the glittering trails we see when the sparkler is lit. A binder, usually dextrin mixed with water, is used to hold all these ingredients together.

Once the mixture is ready, it is applied to a stick or a metal wire. This is done by dipping the stick into the paste-like mixture, allowing it to coat the surface evenly. After dipping, the sparklers are left to dry completely, usually for a day or two, in a dry and ventilated space. This step is crucial, as any moisture can prevent the sparkler from lighting properly.

Once dry, the sparkler is ready to use. When lit, the fuel ignites first, followed by the oxidizer and the metal powders, which create the bright, colorful sparks that shoot out from the stick.
