Disclaimer: Though feminism has it's problems with being inclusive and has racist tendencies and trans erasure tendencies and a past of disgusting "political lesbianism" (as opposed to lesbians being lesbians) and even more... It's obviously still important due to the comments below. We can't even get past "ironic sexism" to talk about the other issues. But I wrote this for my friend Emily who is 2,000 miles away and posted it here for her to see.

[I'm reading off my computer screen again...]
my good friend Emily is a dancer.
she is a lady in every sense of the word,
she is graceful,
and polite,
she is beautiful, but she doesn't know
because her body was not bred for ballet
so they tell her, "you wont make it in the real deal one day!"
but she is a dancer...
so she counts her calories and watches her weight
and she's runs four miles because of that sliver of cake
and she feels she isn't worth it...
so when she told me what he did, I felt no suprise
the way he made his mark between her thighs
because she is a lady,
and lady's are supposed to say maybe when they mean no
sorry, when they mean don't touch me
because they can't be prudes of course and goodness knows he never told
because being a slut is a four letter suicide note
and she's already done a damn good job making her way to being bones.

tell me, if the princess could feel the pea, how does it feel to be a lady?
when you sleep at night can you still feel the imprint of his body?
how about the stains on your sheets?
you know the ones with the little colored animal feet printed on them?

these days it goes that when
daddy's little angel starts to look up feminism
on the family computer
mamma gets worried she's one of those girls
when
are we going to worry that she's not?
it is the 21st century and I was not bred to be a wife,
I was bred to be me,
I believe
in teaching the little Emily's to say, "hey! I will do ballet with every inch of me
and if it's not tradition to weigh 150 pounds, let's rewrite history, because I wont let anyone
tell me who I can and cannot be."

when, will feminism, stop being a dirty word?
fuck what you think you heard about extremist groups preaching matriarchy or
how we've reached a close enough level of equality,
close enough isn't close enough.
someone needs to remind people that samwhich jokes aren't funny.
some people make samwhiches for a living!
and is that what she said? really? because I thought it was something a little more witty,
a little less sex object, a little more like a scientific discovery.

and men,
I want you to get angry.
I want you to be the annoying guy who says, "man, she's too drunk just leave her be."
let's make america rape free
let's make america hate free
let's be the changes we want to see in society

but if you still don't see a need for that feminism thing, just think,
if I wasn't a dyke, there's nothing I'd love more
than a man in a shirt that said,
"this is what a feminist looks like."
