Military Design 101: JSOU Enabling Innovative Thought and Action for USSOCOM with Mr. Ben Zweibelson, Joint Special Operations University SOF Design and Innovation Program (Contractor)

In this brief design overview video, one of JSOU’s military design theorists and educators answers three key questions to interested viewers. First, Ben addresses “what is design” at the most abstract level and how human societies approach design thinking differently than other types of thought and action. He threads how ‘designing’ in complex reality is interrelated to deliberate planning activities however ‘design’ is different in several key ways. Next, he tackles the question of “what is the value of design for Special Operations Forces (SOF)?” Here, Zweibelson summarizes how designing for security activities differs contextually from other types of design methods, and therefore requires a nuanced methodological stance, different interdisciplinary combinations, as well as military-unique vocabulary was well as a deep appreciation of military planning doctrine, practices, and military culture. Last, Ben answers the question of “what are design classes like at JSOU?” The Joint Special Operations University, located in Tampa on MacDill Air Force Base is home to the flagship educational center for the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). JSOU provides the educational development of the SOCOM enterprise, as well as outreach across the entire Department of Defense, related USG agencies, and international Special Forces and defense organizations. JSOU’s design program has deep ties across multiple military units, professional military education programs, and international military and civilian design communities of practice. The JSOU design program has directly influenced design education at the NATO School, multiple international military war colleges, as well as advanced DoD professional military education across the services and military components at the unclassified through classified levels. The JSOU faculty enable design theory and practice through dynamic classroom, online, ‘flipped classroom’ blended learning, translated (as required), hybrid approaches as well as real-world design applications for critical SOCOM and other military missions requiring design education and outreach.
