Going into week 5, we are growing Basil (3), Red Pak Choi (2), Mini-tomatoes (1), Chilis (1), and Arugula or Rocket in vermiculite (2).

Our 3 basil plants are growing strong, and we have started to harvest the larger leaves.
We harvest the basil by topping the plant, as basil responds well to pruning. You can expect two new branches to form for each top you cut.

The Red Pak Choi looks strong, but some of the lower leaves are starting to look a bit sad. To help new growth, I will begin harvesting the outer leaves to help fresh leaves grow and develop from below.

As a side note, I harvested the entire lettuce plants in an earlier video. I did this as the plant was mature, and I wanted the space to grow arugula/rocket in vermiculite. An alternative to harvesting the entire plant would have been to start cutting the outer leaves to help new leaves develop.

The Mini-tomato plant is growing well and is starting to form nice-looking top formations. More to come over the next couple of weeks.

Our Chili plant is developing nicely, and it will be interesting to see what the next couple of weeks bring.

The arugula or rocket seeds planted in week 4 have germinated and are sprouting first leaves. Both the plastic lids and the germination domes were removed during week 5.

As vermiculite is inert and holds no nutritional value, it will be interesting to follow this next step of development.
Should we see slow or stunted growth, I will add nutrition, as I explained in the week 4 video. More to come.

On a side note, I have not had to top-water the vermiculite. It seems like the Smart Garden 9 wick system transfers enough moister to the vermiculite.

To summarize, week 5 has been eventful, and we are starting to harvest and taste some of our plants. And it tastes great. The Smart Garden is a proper hands-off indoor gardening system, and it is a luxury to have fresh herbs and leafy greens right there in the kitchen.
