Do you like The Amityville Horror or Poltergeist? How about Disturbing Behavior? Maybe Hellraiser: Bloodline is more your speed? What about creature features; killer genetically engineered dogs on the loose, like Watchers or Man's Best Friend? Whatever your horror movie tastes, there's a 1990s YA horror novel to pair with it! Today I'm going to recommend some of them to you!

From R.L. Stine's Fear Street and Ghosts of Fear Street, to the short-lived Babysitters Nightmares series, on through to a Nightmare Club book (that isn't branded as such), I'll tell you what each has in common with your favorite horror movie. Haunted houses; nightmare dreamscapes; behavior modification; genetically engineered military bioweapons - you might be surprised what these YA novels have in common with these grown-up horror movies!

I've recapped all the books mentioned here on my website, and in every case was struck by the thought that the authors were heavily inspired by the horror movies I've paired these books with. R.L. Stine claims he's copied Stephen King (Pet Sematary specifically) no less than five times in his own books, but it was clear from reading his haunted house book, 99 Fear Street: The House of Evil: The First Horror (yes, all of that is the official title, and the first in a trilogy), that he "borrowed" heavily from both The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist. Kid (and the dog!) getting sucked into the walls of the house! Evil in the basement! House sits atop an unmarked burial ground! Stine was clearly ahem inspired by these movies.
