Описание к видео Mitosis in action: the fascinating process of cell division in 3D

Mitosis is a type of cell division in which one mother cell divides to produce two new genetically identical daughter cells. This process is essential for the growth, development, and repair of tissues in multicellular organisms.

The process of mitosis can be divided into several phases:
1. Prophase: the chromosomes condense, making them easier to separate later. The mitotic spindle, a structure made of microtubules, forms. The nuclear envelope dissolves.
2. Metaphase: the chromosomes align at the cell's equator, forming the metaphase plate.
3. Anaphase: the sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell. This separation ensures each daughter cell gets an identical set of chromosomes.
4. Telophase: the chromosomes start to decondense, the mitotic spindle breaks down, and nuclear envelopes reform around each set of chromosomes. This effectively creates two new nuclei.

Cells that frequently divide, like skin cells, undergo mitosis more often than those that don't, like neurons. This is why skin wounds can heal relatively quickly, while nerve damage may be more permanent. Mitosis is not just about creating new cells; it's also crucial for maintaining genetic stability. Errors during mitosis can lead to genetic mutations, which might cause diseases such as cancer.
