Farmland consolidation as a 100-year trend is considered to be closely linked to the decrease in young and BIPOC farmers in the agriculture industry.

As the age of farmers in the United States averages 57.5, the challenges for entry that come with land consolidation—high prices, low supply—are preventing a healthy circulation of new talent and innovative practices. More than 50 percent of the farmland in the U.S. is predicted to change hands in the next 20 to 25 years, creating an opportunity for diversification within the food supply, or to make things more challenging and further consolidate farms.

The recent trends in farm consolidation were well documented by the Union of Concerned Scientists in 2021. During the 40-year period of their study, overall U.S. farmland acreage declined 13 percent. But the amount of harvested cropland in farms with more than 1,000 acres nearly doubled, growing by an area larger than the state of California.
