Cambodia: Australian MP and Deputy Leader of ALP promised close relation

Clare O'Neil, Federal Member for Hotham, who initiated the motion on Cambodia, Shadow Minister Hon Tanya Plibersek MP and representatives of CNRP from Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra and other representatives from the Cambodian Associations.

After speaking in Parliament, behind closed door The Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, Labor's Foreign Affairs Spokesperson and deputy leader of ALP and MP Clare O'Neil declared their strong support and want to work closer with the Cambodian community.

Below is the motion on Cambodia:
The Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, Labor's Foreign Affairs Spokesperson and deputy leader of ALP, speaking in support of the motion. The motion reads as follows:

MS O'NEIL: To move—That this House:
(1) notes that in July 2013 general elections were held in Cambodia, the results of which have been disputed and led to civil unrest;
(2) notes that on 2 and 3 January 2014:
(a) 5 people were killed by Cambodian security forces while protesting in Phnom Penh; and
(b) 23 people were detained for participating in protests to secure a better wage for garment workers; and
(3) calls on the Australian Government to:
(a) join human rights organisations and multinational business leaders to express deep concern over the actions of the Cambodian Government;
(b) condemn violence against protesters; and
(c) ask the Cambodian authorities to release those detained for social and political activism.
In addition to this, I, with Shadow Ministers Hon Tanya Plibersek and Hon Mark Dreyfus MP, met with former Foreign Minister and Cambodia Expert Professor Gareth Evans to raise your concerns. Gareth is deeply concerned with the situation, as you are, and was aware of your activism on the subject. He has recently written this extremely strong editorial on the issues you raised, which I think clearly states his disgust with the current state of affairs.http://www.todayszaman.com/news-34050...
Like you I was disappointed to see that Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop failed to condemn the violence at the January protests during her recent trip to Cambodia, instead using her visit to attempt to negotiate a new asylum seeker strategy. The Shadow Minister Tanya Plibersek, however, shares our concerns and has been extremely supportive, releasing the following statement ahead of Ms Bishop's trip:
"The Labor Opposition calls on the Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, to register Australia's concern about the civil unrest in Cambodia, following its disputed 2013 general election. It is understood the Foreign Minister begins a visit to Cambodia later today. Reports say five people were killed by Cambodian security forces earlier this year while demonstrating in Phnom Penh. And more than 20 people were detained for participating in protests to secure better wages for garment workers. Violence against peaceful protestors cannot be tolerated. Ms Bishop must ask Cambodian authorities to release those detained for their social and political activism."
