THE DHANGARS OF GOA

Goa, India’s smallest state has played an important part in shaping the history of India. It has its unique culture and heritage and a lot of this comes from the original settlers, the tribes of Goa. Goa has four main tribal communities the Gawada, Kunbi, Velip, and Dhangar. The Dhangar in Goa are recognized as shepherds who are similar to the Maratha shepherds of the Konkan region.

The film highlights issues of tribal land rights, cultural transmission, agrarian crisis and rights of forest-dwelling communities to land and other resources denied to them over decades as a result of the continuance of colonial forest laws in India.

All COVID precautions were taken while filming this episode and no one has showed any symptoms in the days following this trip.
