We live in a time of labels and diagnosis. Where what is important for our mental health is constantly being reinforced. A time where best practice guidelines are being developed to tell us how we universally deal with mental illness. But what of the individual's solution? Diagnostic manuals say that hearing voices, delusions are symptoms of mental illness. I pose the question - 'Are these an individual's solution to deal with the world?' Susan McFeeley is a National Team leader of the Irish Non-Governmental Organisation, SHINE - supporting people affected by mental ill health. She has been involved in the development and steering a number of mental health recovery initiatives in Ireland such as Gateway peer drop-in centre, MOJO Men etc. She is co-author and developer of the pan-European mental health education courses'Prospect', and was involved in the development of and co-authored 'Eolas', a psycho-education programme for individuals who experience psychosis and their families that is a core component of the Irish Health & Safety Executive's National Psychosis clinical programme. Susan is currently engaged in the development of a number of National mental health policies for Ireland. For over 20 years, Susan has worked in the area of intellectual disability and mental health. She has a background in nursing, education and psychoanalysis. She has presented both nationally and at international conferences on mental health and has published in psychoanalytic journals. Susan is a National Team leader of the NGO, Shine - supporting people affected by mental ill health.
