The Dakota Fire Pit is a way to utilize fire without the negative affects of smoke. Best for fall and winter simply because most actually want the smoke to ward off bugs in the warmer months, it actually has an added benefit not yet mentioned... It warms up the ground pretty well and is easy to lie next to without fear of catching your gear on fire. Also since most of the fire (if not all) is under the ground level, so you're not raising awareness of your location if you happen to be stealth camping. If you have a lean-to or teepee type setup, this can go right underneath it next to your sleep setup.
