Mark Rutte - has just won one of the toughest jobs in the world. As NATO's fourteenth secretary general since 1949, he will lead the most successful alliance in history at a time of turmoil, tension and growing conflict, and he has already taken the initiative to continue NATO's policy of having Ukraine's back through thick and thin.

In Rutte's case, the message is clear: while there is much to criticize about NATO's response to the war in Ukraine, its leaders seem to have learned from the mistakes of their predecessors.
