Leather Working - Axe Sheath Making - Part 3 - Bushcraft Axe Sheath - Bruce Cheaney Leathercraft. Leather axe sheath making. How to make a leather axe sheath tutorial. I started making this axe sheath by designing a pattern that I had in my mind but as you will see by the end of this session and the first part of the next axe sheath making series the design of the axe sheath will change slightly.

The glue I am using to glue the fillers in the sheath is made by DAP and is called Weldwood it is a very good contact clue that works great for leather also. I use a C.S. Osborne and Company scratch compass to scratch a stitch groove in the axe sheath this enables me to see where to sew and also allows the thread to set down in the groove to keep the stitches from wearing out.

The machine I am using is a cowboy harness stitcher leather sewing machine that I use for sewing axe sheath knife scabbards and western saddles that I make. I like and use polyester white thread size 346 and for this project I have a size 230 Schmetz needle.

You will notice due to the stiffness of this piece of leather I had a little bit of trouble sewing this axe sheath but I did not panic and I got the sheath sewn just fine. I wanted to leave this part in the video just to show you that sometimes things just don't go as smoothly as you would like but if you have patience and determination you will get the job done.
