Описание к видео Cambodia - Health care

(31 Jul 1998) T/I: 10:00:30

Cambodia's health care system is grossly inadequate to cope with the demands of a population of 10-million people according to local and foreign doctors working in the country's hospitals. Due to the current plight of medical care, the Sihanouk Hospital Centre of HOPE was established. Medical care is free and the local staff are committed because salaries are much higher.

SHOWS:

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA RECENT
Exterior municipal hospital;
Hospital sign;
Opthamology ward in hospital;
Lone nurse (others have left for the day for other jobs);
Close-up elderly patient's face;
Wide patients on beds;
SOT from Dr. Cameron Gifford, Director Centre of Hope Sihanouk Hospital (funded by charities): "It's horrible because first of all, it's easier if you live in and around Phnom Penh and you can take a taxi or motorbike into town but, if you live in a province out in a poor village, there's hardly anything available, virtually no medicine, no medical expertise.";
Another ward in the municipal hospital;
Close-up patient with bandaged eye;
Intravenous fluid;
Patient's family member rubbing his chest (relatives stay with patients to ensure they are looked after in the absence of doctors and nurses);
SOT from Dr Ou Vun, former government-paid doctor now working for Medécins Sans Frontières: "A doctor like me could receive, I can say 15 to 20 dollars a month.";
GVS Dr Vun checking a patient in the municipal hospital;
SOT from Dr Vun: "The salary with the government is not enough for our living conditions.";
SOT from Dr. Yves Marchandy, Medécins Sans Frontières: "In Cambodia you need at least $150 by month so, what happened, all the staff work a little bit in the morning in the hospital and after they leave for the private consultation to make money. It's completely normal. This is one of the big problems we are facing.";
Exterior municipal hospital emergency clinic;
Patients in beds;
Close-up elderly male patient who is very thin;
Relative fanning elderly female patient to keep her cool;
Exterior modern Centre Of Hope Sihanouk Hospital, funded by charities; Ambulance outside;
Ward in Centre of Hope;
Two nurses checking patient;
Screen monitoring patient;
Nurse;
SOT from Dr Gifford: "If they cannot come to a place like this, many times they cannot afford health care. They'll be turned away, they may be given a bed in another hospital but they'll be given no medicine, no treatment, they'll just be left to be in a hospital bed and die if they have no treatment money.";
GVS Dr Gifford checking on progress of boy with malaria;
SOT from Centre of Hope patient in Khmer: "I know the hospital is here because the government spread the information. Only this (type of) health service can help (poor people like me)".;
SOT from Maurits Van Pelt, Medécins Sans Frontières: "What you see is a system that lacks the fundamental resources to function properly.";
GVS patients in municipal hospital ward;
