📝 Small print - How wording of clauses makes a huge difference to the value of a contract 💰

📝 Small details can make a huge difference to the value of a contract. Here are 3 details to be vigilant of when negotiating a contract:

Example 1 - Loyalty bonus v Signing bonus. Both are paid in equal annual instalments but, when a player transfers out of a club all unpaid years of a signing fee are required to be paid in a lump sum, whereas the amounts still due under a loyalty bonus aren't subject to the same requirement, which can result in a net difference of hundreds of thousand of pounds to the player.

Example 2 - Appearance bonuses. The detail will stipulate whether they're payable only when a player is named in the starting team, or enters before a certain minute, or is proportionate to the minutes on the pitch, that small detail in relation to an up and coming player can often make the difference between them earning a little over their agreed annual wage and earning significantly more in appearances from the bench.

Example 3 - Buy-out clause. There are various versions of this clause; does it apply to every transfer window throughout the term of the contract, for specific years only, or even certain months during the transfer window (often not valid in August, for example). If a clause expires it takes objectivity out of the value, almost exclusively to the detriment of the player's benefit and even the chances of a deal happening.
