In a recent address, veteran journalist Matiullah Jan delivered a powerful critique of the newly amended Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2025, asserting that it represents a deliberate state policy aimed at eradicating journalism in Pakistan and silencing dissenting voices. He emphasized that the legislation's vague definitions of "fake news" could be misused to suppress freedom of expression and intimidate journalists.

The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has vehemently opposed the PECA amendments, organizing nationwide protests and observing a "Black Day" to demand the law's repeal. PFUJ President Afzal Butt criticized the government's unilateral decision to pass the law without consulting journalistic bodies, viewing it as an attempt to gag freedom of speech.

The amended PECA law introduces stricter penalties for disseminating "false or fake" information, including prison sentences of up to three years and fines of two million rupees. It also establishes a social media regulatory authority with its own investigation agency and tribunals, raising concerns among journalists and rights activists about potential misuse to suppress dissent.

In response to the legislation, a coalition for freedom of expression has been formed, comprising organizations such as the PFUJ, Supreme Court Bar Association, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, and others. This coalition aims to collectively oppose the PECA amendments and advocate for the protection of press freedom in the country.
