FIM (F* I Missed) Pruning Method for Cannabis Production

Goal is Multiple Tops
The FIM technique is also a way to create multiple tops.
It is very similar to topping since it is technically a type of topping except the cut is not “clean”.
Note: True topping will result in a more developed main stem that can support more top growth unsupported.
It is like the grower feels like they look back at their “topping” and say… F@#k I missed.



NOT Recommended for Autoflowers
The FIM technique is not recommended for autoflowers due to the delay in plant growth.
This will result in lost plant matter production days which will mean the auto flowers will likely not reach full potential.
So, if this technique is used on auto flowers the “advantages” will likely be mitigated by the required increase of plant numbers required to make-up for the difference.

Top Selection
When selecting a “top” to prune growers should be looking for a tip that has four full nodes and is developing a fifth.
Look specifically for the small early branch points for leaf clusters.
Typically 5-6 nodes up on the plant will allow for maximum efficiency
The plant stem tip remaining will grow back slowly into multiple new branch points.
Often times there can be some discoloration due to the physical damage to the area.



Timing
While there may be no set exact timing general rule would be to start 2-3 nodes up on the plant.
This can result in a box-like plant that is about 2.5ft wide and tall.



Bend Then FIM?
Some growers will bend their plants 90-degrees and then FIM their plants to maximize the plant space while minimizing the overall plant height.
Also, this technique can help produce many growing points that can allow for efficient production of plant material for cloning purposes.
