Founded in 1958, Guangdong Music and Folk Art Troupe is both a professional art troupe specializing in the creation, performance and research of Guangdong Music and Folk Art and a national intangible cultural heritage preservation unit of two major representative programs, namely, Guangdong Music and Cantonese Operatic Songs.
The Troupe possesses a great batch of Guangdong Music performers and folk art artists who own exquisite musicianship, rich experience and worldwide reputation. For a long time, the Troupe has always been adhering to the tenet of inheriting, innovating and developing Guangdong Music and folk art, and constantly excavates, adapts and creates plenty of excellent Guangdong Music and folk art works, reaping plentiful and substantial fruits. In previous national, provincial and municipal art performances, the Troupe frequently won special honors, and once successively won “Splendid New Program Award” and “Splendid Show Award” granted by the Ministry of Culture of PRC. In addition, the Troupe frequently won the highest-level award of China folk art “Peony Award”. In the past 5 years, the Troupe won 36 provincial and national awards altogether. In the long-term artistic practice, the Troupe has not only formed an artistic style featuring strong local characteristics, but also created its own brand evening party and programs, such as Echoing Cantonese Melodies Guangdong Music Folk Art Evening Party, Beautiful Flower City in South China New Artists New Works Evening Party, Oriental Amazing Voice Guangdong Music Classic Concert, Funny Hawkers VS Urban Management Officers Cantonese Crosstalk Drama and so on. In addition, the Troupe has published Guangdong Music Folk Art Works Collection and recorded lots of audio-visual products, prevailing and sold well worldwide.
The Troupe abides by the Cultural and Artistic Guideline of CPC, adheres to the purpose of serving society and the general public, shows programs in both rural and urban areas of Guangdong, overfulfils performance task each year, insists on performing high-quality programs at low ticket prices all year round in Rainbow theater, and turns the theater into well-received Guangdong Music and folk art demonstration base among viewers and a platform for disseminating Lingnan culture.
As an artistic unit at a much higher level, the Troupe always undertakes the task of organizing programs for foreign affairs performance and grand evening parties held by governmental departments, and wins high praises from foreign guests and state leaders, and as such, it is renowned as “Guangzhou Cultural Name Card”. Since establishment, the Troupe has successively performed in former Soviet Union, Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, America, Canada, Britain, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and other places.
In April, 2009, Sounds of the East —a concert of classic Guangdong Music elaborately created by the Troupe was successfully held in the Music Hall of the World — Vienna's Golden Hall, thereby achieving the long-cherished wish of several generations of Guangdong Music people; the Troupe went to Poland for 9 touring performances in 2010 and succeeded in launching to European market; the Troupe also participated in Guangzhou Art Festival 2010, the 9th China Art Festival, the 16th Asian Games and some other activities; in 2011, the Troupe successfully went to Beijing, Tianjin, Inner Mongolia, Hong Kong and other places for touring performances ; in 2012, the Troupe went to Harbin to participate in the “31st Harbin Summer Concert”; the Troupe has made outstanding contributions to propagate excellent Lingnan culture for responding to the call of Guangdong Municipal Committee and People's Government on building powerful cultural city and turning Guangzhou into a world-renowned historical and cultural city .
