It was a slaughter.

Wave after wave of soaked, trembling GIs stepped onto that cursed beach, straight into the teeth of German guns. D-Day, the largest invasion in history, was unraveling. The brass had promised bombs would clear the way.
They hadn't.

Now it was down to men like Private William Stump, shoved behind the seawall while the generals sat safe in warm briefing rooms. If this were to be his last day, he wanted one last smoke.

He turned to the soldier beside him and asked for a light.
The man turned. Stump saw the stars on his helmet. He froze for a moment, then apologized profusely.

"That's all right, son. We're all here for the same reason."
Brigadier General Norman "Dutch" Cota, the oldest man on Omaha Beach, saw the fear in the men’s eyes. They wouldn’t take the beach like this.
Cota stood tall and said, in a voice as calm as stone:
"Gentlemen, we are being killed on the beaches. Let us go inland and be killed."
