Taking a trip on the Hythe Pier Railway and Ferry; a train and boat service which connects the town of Hythe with Southampton across the Southampton Water (the land route between the two locations is a 10 mile journey). The railway in its current guise was built in 1922 and is the oldest continuously operating public pier railway in the world. No.1 “Gerald Yorke” provides the traction for the day, and is one of two locos used by the railway which date back to WW1, originally battery powered and in use at a mustard gas factory in Avonmouth. This service was due to be withdrawn at the end of 2022, but fortunately was saved some 48 hours before services were due to cease.
