Kumu Patrick Makuakāne has received one of the most prestigious awards in the arts: he has been named among the class of 2023 MacArthur Fellows.

The Fellowship, also known as the MacArthur “genius grant,” is a coveted award given to individuals who show exceptional creativity in their work and the prospect for still more in the future. Previous Fellows in the field of choreography and dance include luminaries such as Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Bill T. Jones, Alexei Ratmansky, and Kyle Abraham. Makuakāne is the first Native Hawaiian to receive this award.
