Описание к видео Black Hole Assault (Sega CD) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Micronet's 1992 fighting game for the Sega CD, Black Hole Assault.

Played through the "Operation BHA" (story) mode.

Black Hole Assault is the sequel to the 1991 mech-fighting/platformer game Heavy Nova. And though BHA is hardly a master work, it is a significant step forward over its widely panned predecessor.

The story is largely a collection of forgettable, throwaway sci-fi tropes that manages to be completely nuts, but it props the game up well enough for a game from 1992. There are a lot of relatively impressive anime-style cinematics that carry the "narrative" forward through the eight fights that stand between you and the finale, featuring some catchy music, ridiculous voice acting, and some reasonably nice, often quite funny, minimally animated cutscenes that were pretty standard in the Sega CD and TurboCD era titles. It's clear that the Sega CD was new and the developers were relying on the "wow" factor from how much time seemed to be spent focusing on the presentation.

The fighting engine has seen quite a bit of criticism, though, and it's pretty warranted in my opinion. The action is slow and feels cumbersome, with simplistic movesets and seemingly arbitrary gravity effects that don't do much but get in the way. You do get to choose your mech, but the choice doesn't make too much difference since the majority of the game can be handled by simply jump kicking and sweep kicking your enemy to bits. The characters are all animated pretty stiffly and don't bear much detail, but many of the stages do have some nice touches to them and the music is fairly good.

I didn't hate Black Hole Assault like many reviewers seem to, but I can't say that I particularly loved it either. It's got a few neat things going on, but the whole thing is about as mediocre as it gets. The story scenes are quite fun to watch, and the gameplay is much better than Rise of the Robots, even if that is hardly a ringing endorsement. You might enjoy it, you might not, but at least it's pretty common and cheap if you played every other fighter on the Sega CD and still find yourself wanting more.

And if you haven't played it, before BHA I'd recommend Bignet's other Sega CD fighting game, Revengers of Vengeance. That is, if you want something a bit more innovative and polished.
