It was opened in 1838, rebuilt in 1880, and subject to electrification in 1974. It is situated in Preston City Centre, close to the River Ribble, Avenham and Miller Parks, Winckley Square, the Park Hotel, Fishergate Bridge, County Hall and St. Walburge's Church.
