Self directed education

Anelle Burger chats to Adèle Breedt on the topic of unschooling , or as Adèle prefers to label it “ self ( or child) directed learning”.

Connie and Adèle will be married for 30 years this year. They are the parents of Ivan, Eduan and Duart who they homeschooled, from pre-school all the way through high school, because they wanted to build strong family cohesion; transfer their values and give them a glorious carefree childhood.

Duart has graduated with a Bachelors degree in Information Science and is currently working for Entelect as a Software Engineer while pursuing an Honours degree in Computer Science.

Eduan has consistently achieved a yearly aggregate of above 80% for his Bachelors degree studies in Physiotherapy and is currently completing his Community Year while also acting as a research assistant at the University.

Ivan has also graduated, but as a Mechanical Engineer, and is busy with his combined Honours & Masters Degree.

The Breedts are considered one of the pioneering homeschooling families in the Eastern Cape. Adèle served on the Executive of the Eastern Cape Homeschooling Association for 10 years, chairing it (with Connie) for 7 of those years.
